How to Pay for Home Care
Many people worry about the cost of paying for home care for themselves or for a loved one. There are many options and packages available to families. Below we have listed some suggested methods for you to pay for home care.
BAYADA Home Health Care can help you to select the most appropriate care package to meet your individual needs.
Home Care Packages
Home care packages are funded by the HSE to enable people to remain at home. These services may be delivered directly by private home care providers, like BAYADA, directly by the HSE, or combination of both. The level of care provided depends on the needs of the person at home.
You do not need to have a medical card in order to apply for a Home Care Package. There will be no means test – no assessment of your income. The supports you receive will be based on your assessed care needs.
The local HSE office decides how the home care support package is delivered. The scheme differs around Ireland depending on the geographic area, population, person’s care requirements and skill mix of staff available to deliver the services available. BAYADA can assist with the application to your local HSE office for an appropriate home care package.

Contributions by Client and/or Family Members
Financial contributions can be made to supplement a home care package. Additional home care services can also be provided depending on need and family circumstances.
If a client does not receive a home care package from the HSE, BAYADA can make recommendations for an appropriate home care package.
Tax relief is available for home care costs. The person receiving the care, or their family members, can claim tax relief. Personal income tax relief is available from 20% to 40%, depending on income.
VAT is not charged on home care services.
Private Health Insurance
In certain circumstances it may be possible to secure assistance with payment from a private health insurance company. BAYADA can assist you with advice in this area.
Cost of Care
Cost of care depends on the needs of the client. BAYADA carry out a care needs assessment to determine the level and frequency of care required. These needs can vary from a few hours a week to more complex intensive home care packages.
Following an assessment BAYADA would propose a personalised package (including skill-mix of care team, medical equipment etc) for the client, based on their care needs, family involvement and budget.
There is no charge for a care needs assessment, or any BAYADA consultations with the family.
Disclaimer: BAYADA Home Health Care would recommend consulting your financial advisor or accountant before entering into any financial agreement or completing / submitting any applications for Government funded schemes.
